Mazda6 vs Toyota Camry

It's Mazda6 Versus the Toyota Competition in Olympia, WA -- Which Mid-Size Sedan Pulls Ahead?

As more traveling families move toward the latest new crossovers and SUVs, the ever-busy market for the four-door favorites of the last few decades isn't getting narrower -- in fact, old rivalries have become new again, and they're more heated than ever. That's because automakers are loading them with the latest and most competitive performance and safety technologies and creature comforts and amenities around. Nowhere is this more pronounced than the competition between the new Mazda6 and its longer-lived counterpart, Toyota Camry.

Choose the Mazda6 Sport base, step up to Mazda6 Touring, go midrange in Grand Touring, or choose all the premium trappings in Mazda6 Grand Touring Reserve or Signature, and you'll find a prime example to take on Toyota's sedan. The new Camry squares up in trims ranging from L and LE to SE, XLE, and XSE, with V6 trim options for the last two to boot -- a seemingly even matchup. However, you'll soon find Mazda6 in the winner's circle. There are more than a few reasons why, too. Check them out here at Mazda of Olympia!

The Mazda6 vs. Toyota Camry

  • A 187-horsepower, 2.5-liter SKYACTIV®-G engine comes standard, ready to deliver an energetic 186 pound-feet of torque. Camry may offer a higher-powered 203-horsepower, 2.5-liter Dynamic Force I4 engine in its base model, but you'll need to go top-of-the-line to surpass up-to-250-horsepower SKYACTIV-G 2.5T Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine standard in Mazda6 Grand Touring and later.
  • Making Mazda6 even sportier, a standard SKYACTIV®-MT six-speed manual transmission and SKYACTIV-VEHICLE DYNAMICS with G-Vectoring Control deliver a combination of hands-on excitement and sharp cornering capabilities. Camry features only an eight-speed electronically controlled auto, no manual, and Toyota doesn't offer GVC.
  • Cylinder deactivation capability, a characteristic of select Mazda6 powertrains, adjusts engine displacement to reduce fuel consumption when extra power isn't needed, resulting in exceptional efficiency. It's not, however, characteristic of any of Camry's four engine offerings.
  • Between them, Mazda6 is more tech-savvy, entertaining, and better connected than Toyota Camry. It features a MAZDA CONNECT&#trade; Infotainment System with an 8-inch touchscreen in base models, complete with the ease of use of voice command and a multifunction Commander control. HD Radio, Aha, Pandora and Stitcher support appear for expanded listening options, and an available Mazda Navigation System and 11-speaker Bose Centerpoint 2 surround-sound audio come standard in Mazda6 Grand Touring and later. Camry offers a choice among four Entune infotainment options in 7-inch base and 8-inch step-up variants, but without the Internet radio options mentioned and with only a selection of six- and nine-speaker sound systems.
  • Mazda6 is the safer bet. Blind-spot and rear cross traffic monitors and Smart City Brake Support come standard from the get-go. Mazda6 Touring and later incorporate the safe distancing abilities of Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, standard and advanced Smart City Brake Support systems, the former with a collision warning feature, and lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist systems. Mazda6 Signature even builds in a 360-degree camera and front and rear parking sensors standard. Camry has a similarly equipped Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) suite, but blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are only standard in the midrange and later.
