Compare the 2018 Mazda CX-5 Against the 2018 Honda CR-V

If you're looking for a compact SUV, you'll have plenty of models choose from. At Mazda of Olympia, it's no surprise that the Mazda CX-5 is our segment favorite, but it has a few contenders to go up against, and one of its biggest rivals is the Honda CR-V.

Today we're going to compare the 2018 Mazda CX-5 to the 2018 Honda CR-V and prove why ours is the one you'll want to buy or lease!

At face value, the Honda CR-V's engines aren't that much stronger or weaker than the Mazda CX-5's, but horsepower doesn't tell the entire story. Handling and steering also matter, and all Mazda models are known for their adept drive quality. The Mazda CX-5, along with several other new Mazda's, has SKYACTIV-VEHICLE DYNAMICS® with G-Vectoring control that make it fun to drive in the city, on the backroads, or at high-speeds.

The Honda CR-V, on the other hand, has been known for its polarizing look, due to the "hump" in the back of the vehicle. Recently it's gotten a little sleeker with more character lines and bolder wheels, but it's still a model that can look good from some angles and awkward from others. If you're a style-forward shopper, then you'll probably gravitate to the Mazda CX-5 more than the Honda CR-V.

The Honda CR-V's base model has a much leaner list of standard features. You'll get a rearview camera, LEDS (but only on the daytime running lights), Bluetooth, hill assist, and eco assist. Both base trims have the option to add on an advanced safety package - i-ACTIVSENSE® or Honda Sensing® - but the Mazda CX-5 already comes with some great crash avoidance features.

It's also worth noting that each of the three Mazda CX-5 trims has a package option, but with the remaining Honda CR-V trims there are no other packages. What you see is what you get. Personally, we like the ability to add more features.

Yes, you'll have a lot more room for luggage, boxes, and gear with the Honda CR-V. That said, we do like that the Mazda CX-5 has more flexibility with the 40/20/40 split seats, compared to the 60/40 seats on the Honda CR-V, so you can really maximize the space you do have.

Final Thoughts

The Mazda CX-5 may not be a huge hauler, but we love its stronger list of amenities, smooth ride, and looks that prove a well-rounded vehicle can still be a head-turner! Stop into our Olympia dealership this week for a test drive. The Mazda CX-5 is our most popular model, so you'll have a big selection to shop.

Power & Performance

All Mazda CX-5 trims come with a 2.5L engine with 187 horsepower. The Honda CR-V's base trim has n 184-horsepower engine and the rest of the trims have a turbocharged 1.5L with 190 horsepower.

Appearance & Appeal

One person may love the look of a Picasso and another might say it's not their cup of tea. That's because looks are subjective, but the Mazda CX-5 gets regular nods for its aesthetics. Automotive journalists, customers, and even drivers of luxury-models have noted Mazda CX-5's smooth curves, stylish grille, and elegant exterior and interior.

Standard Features & Equipment

The Mazda CX-5 has a long list of standard features that provide great technology and a bit of refinement. Here's a list of our favorites:

  • Touchscreen (7-inches)
  • Push button start
  • Backup camera
  • Bluetooth
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel & gear shift
  • Smart City Brake Support
  • Blind Spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
  • LED headlights with auto on/off function

  •

    Cargo Space

Once you get into the small SUV/crossover segment, it's fair to want some cargo capabilities. With all seats up, the Mazda CX-5 has 30.9 cubic feet of space and with the rear seats flat you have 59.6 cubic feet. Admittedly, the Honda CR-V is known in the segment for being one of the more spacious options, and its cargo dimensions are 39.2/75.8 cubic feet.
